Today is International Women's Day.

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

International Women's Day (March 8th) is a global day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and raising awareness against bias. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality in the workplace and this year’s theme is embrace equity. If you are a working woman (or man), why not use this day to check in and reflect on this topic as well as the state of your own career? Take a few minutes to ask yourself the following questions:

Am I feeling stuck or stalled in my career? Do I dread going to work each day, especially on Mondays? Am I feeling overwhelmed with the stress of balancing work with all my responsibilities at home? What is my energy level at work? How can I stay more centered and calm during times of stress? What is my confidence level? When I was young, what was my dream job? How far or close is my current job to that vision? How happy am I right now? If I could do anything right now, and money wasn’t a factor, what would it be? Do I keep getting passed up for promotional opportunities? Do I work in an environment that is free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination? Is my organization taking action in order to promote more diversity, equity, and inclusion? Do I work in an organization that treats all employees with dignity and respect? Have I been doing all I can to promote gender equity in my department or workplace? Can I be a mentor or sponsor to a female colleague or connection? Is there a woman on my team I could be celebrating, praising, or promoting for a job well done? Is there more I can be doing to ensure a pipeline of female applicants for my department’s current job openings?

If you aren’t happy with your answers to the above questions, it might be a good day to start making a change. Do you want to learn ways to muster up the courage to leave a toxic work environment or stand up for your rights and the rights of others? Perhaps you want to cultivate the confidence to ask for the promotion or salary you know you deserve. Or, you're looking for a strategy to find time for growth in your career while still having energy for your family/personal life. If you want support, consider working with an experienced and certified coach that will partner with you to make positive changes. If you are leading an organization or department, a fantastic way to champion the goal of gender equality is by offering customized coaching to your team.
