Like every industry, coaching uses terminology that isn’t necessarily familiar to most people. The idea of “flow coaching” is one of those. Last year, I got my High Flow Coaching Certification because I believe strongly in the benefits and saw what a positive impact flow had when I played soccer during my college days and beyond. Learning how to achieve a flow state, also known as being "in the zone," enables us to reach peak performance and find more satisfaction in what we do personally and professionally.
I had a client who was beginning a leadership role at a new organization (a Fortune 100 company) and wanted to build her confidence and competence as a leader. To accomplish her goals, she needed help finding her flow state – the mental state at which she felt the best and performed at her best.
First, we worked on diagnosing and limiting her flow blockers. Common flow blockers include:
Mindset
Clarity
Distraction
Motivation
Burnout
Time
Exhaustion
Stress
Overwhelm
Self-sabotage
Once that was complete, we began to initiate flow triggers:
Curiosity/passion/purpose
Autonomy
Complete concentration
Risk
Novelty
Complexity
Unpredictability
Deep embodiment
Clear goals
Challenge/skills ratio
Creativity/pattern recognition
To achieve flow state, a person has to learn how to focus their energy, attention and motivation on their goals. Boredom, anxiety, exhaustion, burn-out and other blockers get in the way of flow state. Feeling challenged, passionate and in control of your activities and setting clear achievable goals move you closer to flow state.
The right coach can work with you to develop strategies to work through your obstacles.
After coaching, my client not only felt more confident and competent, she also got positive feedback on her leadership from all areas of the company, including senior team members. She also survived multiple rounds of layoffs and is poised to take on more responsibility and a probable promotion.
High Flow Coaching Certification has helped my clients and made me a more effective and successful coach. My flow coaching education is continual and I’m delighted to have been invited to do a masterclass for others in the program.
